Mario Ramos-Reyes

Mario Ramos-Reyes began his professional career as successful teacher, and researcher, journalist and internationalist more than fifteen years ago in Paraguay, South America. In the early eighties, he earned two degrees, a BA in Philosophy and J..D. from the Catholic University of Asunción. After occupying leadership positions at both National and Catholic Universities for a few years and, even became one of the youngest members of the National Committee for Educational Reform in 1989, he moved with his family to the United States. After six years of studying and researching, Mario completed a graduate program, earning a Master degree first and a Doctorate later in Intellectual History and Political Philosophy in 1996, from the University of Kansas.

Professor and Speaker

Before coming to KCKCC, Mario was Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Law at the Catholic University, and National University in Asuncion, Paraguay, and also he taught at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas, and a semester as a visiting professor in Spain.

Columnist and Author

Mario has not only presented analytical papers in many conferences (the first back in 1979 at the First International Meeting of Christian Philosophy in Cordoba, Argentina) but also offered seminars and workshops in the States and Latin America Since 1987, mario has published over 1000 columns in different newspapers and magazines Ultima Hora, Huella, Sendero, ABC (Paraguay), El Observador (Uruguay) Dos Mundos (Two Worlds), and The Leaven (Kansas City), among others. In 1997, Mario programmed and co-hosted a weekly TV and radio program in Asuncion, Paraguay. Recently, in January of this year 2002, he gave a series of four programs about the Classical Philosophical tradition in Another Look, a TV program hosted by Father Vincent Krishe of the Catholic Center of the University of Kansas, in Lawrence.

Internationalist

In 1998, Mario initiated, founded and opened the first General Consulate of the Republic of Paraguay to the State of Kansas After served for two years s a diplomat, a work for which was honored by the Kansas Senate, (Res. 1836) and Governor Bill Graves of Kansas in March, 1999, Mario became Consul General Emeritus in 2000. All these experiences have given him not only a rich and first hand knowledge about the world, but a keen awareness of cultural diversity, a critical asset in this process of globalization and sweeping political changes. With that goal in mind, Mario also just started a program in Latino and Hispanic Studies at KCKCC, which planned to be a bridge to the broader Hispanic community, facilitating the tools for growth and education.
