Columns

Most of my writing is in Spanish. From 1988 to 1996, during the first part of my career in Paraguay, I mostly focused on writing a weekly column on politics, democracy, and culture for the Paraguayan daily Última Hora. My articles focused on Paraguay’s transition into a democratic republic in the early 90s, the identity of Latin America in a post-Cold War world, the role of religion in Latin American politics, among other things. Here are a few sample articles from that period in my life:

After 1996, my focus shifted towards issues of international relations between Latin America and the United States, as well as bioethics and church-state relations. I also began to write some longer essays for the weekly cultural magazine published by Última Hora called Correo Semanal. During this period, the (now defunct) Uruguayan daily El Observador also carried my weekly column. Here’s a few articles from this period:

Scholarly Articles

Since obtaining my doctorate degree in 1996—a little before then, actually—I have been presenting scholarly papers at conferences. My dissertation is titled The Impact of Jacques Maritain's Political Thought in 20th Century Latin America, and many of my scholarly pieces deal with the thought of Jacques Maritain, who I consider my great maestro. I also write about metaphysics and issues of bioethics. Here are a few sample scholarly pieces:

Books

I have collected many of my columns in two books, both published by the University Press of the Catholic University of Asunción:

Filosofía y Pensamiento Democrático: Reflexiones Personalistas Sobre La Realidad Polítca (1998), or Philosophy and Democratic Thought: Personalist Reflections on Political Reality, contains columns written between 1988 and 1991.
Ética y Filosofía: Ensayos Dispersos (2005), or Ethics and Philosophy: Dispersed Essays, contains essays written between 1996 and the present.
I also have a chapter in the collection The Common Things: Essays on Thomism and Education (CUA Press 1999) edited by Daniel McInerny. My contribution is titled “Latin American Democracies at the Crossroads.” This book was reviewed by

Local Periodicals

Ever since I moved to Kansas in 1998, I have written occasionally for two local periodicals, the bilingual Hispanic weekly Dos Mundos and the Diocesan newspaper, The Leaven. Here are a few articles from both publications:
